Supporting STEM futures
Year 10 school placement student Urissa
Today on World Youth Skills Day we are highlighting our recent student placement at our offices and lab in Glasgow.
Katrick Technologies continued our commitment to STEM futures by hosting year 10 high school student Urissa at our offices and R&D lab in Glasgow at the end of June. As part of her time here, Urissa shadowed our engineering team as they undertook day-to-day tasks, giving her a taste of what a career in engineering looks like. Urissa worked alongside our design engineers on the development of our Wind Panels, covering everything from the duct and aerofoil design to material selection, electrical engineering to CFD analysis and product innovation.
In addition to this Urissa got to experience the daily lives of our other team members and how we all work together to build a successful and innovative Greentech company. From commercial to operations, finance to marketing, we even brought her along to meet the Ofgem team at their offices in Glasgow.
Urissa already envisages a future for herself in STEM as she is takings her GCSEs in engineering and electrics. As of 2022, women account for just under 27% of the Core-STEM workforce. These numbers are cut in half when we look at the engineering industry where women only make up 13% of the total workforce (WISE UK). However, things are starting to look up. According to WISE, these numbers are expected to increase as women are predicted to represent just over 29% of the STEM field by 2030.
At Katrick we recognise the need to nurture STEM futures across the spectrum and were incredibly happy that Urissa decided to join us for her work placement. We will be continuing in investing in STEM futures through work placements and initiatives in the future.
